Cloud Backup Solution on AWS

Executive Summary

As part of their Operational Optimisation journey, the Internet Services Provider required a reliable platform to store their backups in a simple and effective way.

Francioni helped in the architecture, design and implementation of the AWS services. Delivering the backup solution following AWS best practices. Implementing Infrastructure as Code, to make sure that the infrastructure is fully automated, delivering value to the end customers quickly and reliably.

The Challenge

The customer had their workload running in their datacentres across multiple GEOs.

There were operational challenges around the time taken to complete daily backups, high backup/restore error rate, limited monitoring and scaling challenges. Cost started to be an issue as the volume of data grows overtime.

The Solution

Francioni designed and implemented the backup solution to backup the data from multiple data centres across multiple locations. The backup is stored in Amazon S3 in the nearest region to the data centre. As a result, the latency and time taken to complete the backup was drastically reduced by 30%. The time taken to restore a backup has also reduced considerably.

Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering delivered automatic storage cost savings when data access patterns change, without performance impact or operational overhead. This means that the data lifecycle is automatically managed and the data is moved across the different storage classes, including moving to Cold Storage for long retention.

S3 provided out of the box replication across multiple Availability Zones, providing 11 9's of durability and 99.99% of availability.
